The antenna decides what a GPR can see. A lower centre frequency penetrates deeper but resolves only larger targets; a higher one resolves smaller targets at shallower depths. Choosing and designing the antenna is therefore the first step in building a radar for a given job.
This work compares patch and bow-tie antennas for GPR applications and designs a 400 MHz cavity-backed, CPW-fed bow-tie antenna, taking the designs from electromagnetic simulation and parameter sweeps through fabrication to measurement.
